The Museum is operated as a self-supporting “not for profit” charity through an incorporated Association, The National Railway Museum (SA) Inc. Approximately one-third of the collection, principally rolling-stock, is vested in the South Australian government through the Department for the Arts, the remainder is vested in the Port Dock Station Railway Trust, both bodies loaning the items back to the National Railway Museum for its operations. The museum also operates with volunteers the Semaphore – Fort Glanville railway as and additional revenue source to support the financial viability of the National Railway Museum.
