O’Connells Meats is located in the multicultural heartland of Adelaide, the Central Market, where people from every race, colour and creed go to shop. Five butchers and 14 casual counter staff makes O’Connell’s one of the biggest and busiest butcher shops in South Australia. Two of Tony’s sons Ben and Sam worked at O’Connells all through school for extra spending money and Ben then worked with Tony for 5 years as an apprentice butcher learning the tricks of the trade. Since completing his apprenticeship he’s opened his own shop in the Castle Plaza in Edwardstown. Staying with the family tradition and calling his shop ” O’Connells Poultry”. Ben still goes into the market every morning and helps with any preparation before he goes off to Castle Plaza to run his chicken shop.
Father & son still working very closely in this family run business. Sam who has recently finished his Masters in his own given career (Graphic Design) still lends a hand once or twice a week at both of the O’Connells shops and he also helps to run the business when Ben is on holiday. O’Connells Meats is one of the few butcher shops who have managed through sheer hard work to survive as a family butcher business and have been featured in articles all over the world as one of the many wonderful businesses in the Adelaide Central Market.
